Green Saga: How Storytelling Can Inspire Youth Climate Action

Let’s be honest: not every teen lights up at the thought of a lecture on climate change. Textbook diagrams and long reports don’t always spark the kind of curiosity and action we need in today’s world. That’s exactly why we launched Green Saga! A project that proposes something different to traditional environmental education by using the magic of storytelling to engage young people.

Because saving the planet shouldn’t feel like homework.

What the Project Offers

Green Saga provides a set of structured educational tools designed for youth educators and young learners:

  • 15 adventure books presenting environmental challenges that simulate real-world decision-making
  • A user guide and accompanying materials to support implementation by youth workers and teachers
  • Training for 10 youth workers and pilot activities with 140 young people to refine the materials
  • Translations into six languages to ensure accessibility across Europe
  • Dissemination events in five countries to share the tools and gather feedback from local stakeholders

These resources are being designed with input from both educators and young people to ensure that they are useful, practical, and inclusive.

Project Objectives

The overarching aim of Green Saga is to provide young people with opportunities to build both knowledge and agency in addressing climate issues. More specifically, we aim to:

  • Strengthen environmental awareness and a sense of responsibility
  • Promote active learning, especially through critical thinking and decision-making
  • Equip educators with adaptable tools to introduce climate topics
  • Make resources accessible to learners with specific learning difficulties (SLD)

Real Talk: Why Stories Work

Remember how The Lorax made you think differently about trees? Or how Wall-E got us all emotional over a trash-compacting robot?

That’s the power of narrative since it gets under your skin and sticks with you. Green Saga taps into that power. By transforming climate education into engaging, personal journeys, we aim to empower a new generation to not only learn about sustainability but also to live it.
